Background


A major Hong Kong government department responsible for inspection and enforcement of operation and safety of key infrastructure in Hong Kong. It is also one of the primary government entities serving as a technology advisor and pioneer, promoting and driving innovative application within the public sector.

Challenges

In keeping with their role as a champion of emerging technology, our client has been seeking out new and innovative technology applications to elevate public services and the advancement of safety and compliance in Hong Kong. According to the labour department’s latest workplace safety statistics1, fall-related incident is the most common accidents among industries of construction, manufacturing, and food & beverages. Despite human supervision, there is currently a lack of practical solutions to minimize the occurrence. With this in mind, Lenovo PCCW Solutions (LPS) is entrusted to support the development of cutting-edge AI technology, building specialized AI models from the ground up to power intelligent video analytics to ensure worker safety in outdoor, construction, and operation site in real-time. This challenge necessitated a partner with a proven track record and strong domain knowledge, able to address complex operational requirements within a strict budget and short time frame.

Solutions

LPS developed a comprehensive end-to-end AI-powered video analytics solution that covers various aspects, including video data collection, AI model training, EDGE equipment and processing, networking, front-end GUI, backend logic, and more. The AI model was specifically designed to meet the requirement of the client, considering limitations posed by physical site environments. The model underwent fine-tuning and training to perform effectively in different detection scenarios.

 

Using AI-enabled cameras and systems, the solution is capable to detect safety equipment such as jackets, helmets, and harnesses. By combining real-time monitoring and alerts, staff on patrol can proactively check if workers are complying with necessary safety measures. The AI models are also trained to recognize falls, allowing for immediate incident response in both pedestrian and workplace environments. Furthermore, we make a point to collect data on-site, allowing optimal improvement to the detection accuracy and adaptability of our AI solution in real-life scenarios and supporting compliance with the occupational safety and health regulation in Hong Kong.

The AI models are designed to continuously accumulate intelligence after going live, acquiring new data to serve their role as protectors of workplace safety more accurately and quickly. We have also made privacy a top priority, utilizing face-masking in all processed video to ensure anonymity.
